3 Signs You're Underprepared for Cold Weather Jet Skiing

Not sure if your winter gear setup is cutting it? These three signs will tell you if you’re underprepared — and what to do before your next cold water session.

3 Signs You're Underprepared for Cold Weather Jet Skiing

Some riders are built for winter. Others find out — the hard way — that they weren’t as ready as they thought. Cold weather PWC riding is incredible when you're properly geared up, but without the right prep, it can quickly go from fun to frustrating.

Here are three telltale signs you're underprepared for cold conditions, and what you can do to fix them before your next session.

1. You’re Relying on Layers Under Your Wetsuit

Wetsuits are designed to trap a thin layer of water against your skin — your body warms that water to create insulation. Bulky layers underneath interfere with that system and often make you colder. Cotton, especially, holds water and kills warmth fast.

What to do instead: Wear a properly fitted steamer with nothing underneath, or add warmth by layering over the top — with a neoprene tour coat, thermal rash vest (underneath if needed), and wind-blocking accessories.

2. Your Extremities Go Numb Early

Numb fingers and toes aren’t just uncomfortable — they make riding harder and can increase your risk of losing control. If you're cutting rides short or fumbling with controls, it's time to rethink your gear.

What to do instead: Invest in quality neoprene gloves and boots. A hood or neoprene beanie can also help on especially cold mornings.

3. You Dread the Pack-Up

If you’re freezing the moment you step off your ski — standing wet and barefoot in a carpark — you’re not alone. Cold weather doesn’t end when the engine shuts off.

What to do instead: Bring a dry robe or towel, a full change of warm clothes (including socks), and a flask of something hot. Even a simple pair of slip-on shoes can make changing quicker and more comfortable.
